The Walking Dead catch-up. (Season 2).

So, I love the Walking Dead comic book. It’s really a fine piece of sequential art. The writing is top notch featuring many amazing, complex and compelling characters that are developed over a long saga format. Also, Kirkman is never afraid to sacrifice a character he spent 24 issues developing, which is truly bold. The art is always detailed and evocative making some of the longer monologues and talking head sequences engaging and dynamic.

The Walking Dead tv show is not the same. While I loved the pilot episode directed by Darabont, the rest of season one didn’t live up the ridiculously high standards set by that episode when I saw it on Halloween. The second season started off much better than the first season left off making me excited for how it would turn out. However, the excruciatingly long search for Sophia made me let the last two episodes of the season break sit around. Tonight, I finally got around to watching them. Episode 7 of this season is easily the best episode since the pilot. It moved quickly and that last scene was fucking perfect. Then the show surprises me with the episode 8 by really figuring out how to take the whole long dialogue/monologue aspect of the comic book and making it work in the show with the bar scene at the end. It was perfect, also is getting more into what the comic is about, which isn’t zombies. It’s more of the degeneration of humanity in this wasteland and how morality becomes obsolete when survival is so tenuous. And they did it by showing it instead of the weak attempts by Laurie a few episodes ago with her dumb Sophie’s choice breakdown crying scene.
